CrossFit Muskoka is cottage country's only facility exclusively dedicated to functional fitness and athletic performance.
Immediately upon arrival it will be clear that our gym is a dramatic departure from the rows of treadmills, wall to wall mirrors and cumbersome machines of commercial "globo" gyms. It may not be as clear that spaces like this are where real fitness is developed and indeed earned.
We have proper flooring for safe lifting - no carpet or squishy puzzle mats here!
We provide our clients with accessories conducive to real training such as chalk (magnesium carbonate) and athletic tape.
We also provide high quality local spring water free of charge - you'll need lots!
Our training 'arsenal' includes all the conditioning tools necessary to implement an authentic functional conditioning program;
- High Quality Barbells (no, the Chinese knockoffs with bolts in the end don't count!)
- Bumper Plates, Training Plates and Iron Plates
- Rubber Hex Dumbbells
- Kettlebells
- Sandbags
- Medicine Balls
- Clubbells
- Jump Ropes
- A Rock Solid Pull Up System
- Power Rack
- Squat/Press Racks
- Gymnastic Rings
- Flexbands
- Climbing Ropes
- Battling Ropes
- Tractor Tires and Sledgehammers
- AbMats
- GHD and Roman Chair
- Dip Stations
- Agility Cones, Hurdles and Ladders
- Plyo Boxes
- Parallettes
- Weighted Vests
- Schwinn Airdyne's
- Concept2 Rowers
We didn't forget to add bosu or swiss balls - we don't use 'em! Nor do we use any machines. Wonder why? CrossFit Muskoka is a 'school of fitness'. You will learn something new every session - including why 'beach ball training' isn't functional or safe (unless you fill it with water and carry it around.... another story) and why you should avoid machines like the plague.
We implement the CrossFit prescription of "Constantly Varied, Functional Movements Executed at High Intensity" with the goal of "Increasing Work Capacity Across Broad Time and Modal Domains". In plain English, we train to excel at a wide variety of known, unknown and unknowable tasks. This broad and inclusive fitness has, by definition, the ability to improve your prowess at sport, work and everyday life in ways 'conventional' programming will never approach. The trade off is that it's hard work. It's not possible to read a book or watch t.v. while CrossFitting. Nor is there an opportunity to 'check your guns' in the mirror - in fact we don't even use mirrors (drop us a line if you want to know why!).
CrossFit will change your life. We are so confident that we guarantee your results. Move how we tell you, Train when we tell you and Eat what we tell you - you will accomplish things you never thought possible.
CrossFit Muskoka - Get Fit Here, Live Life Better.
Coaches
Coach D.
"Involved" (read; obsessed) with the pursuit of functional fitness, both in terms of theoretical knowledge and practical application, for a close to a decade.
While dabbling in Tae-Kwon-Do during the late nineties, a strong work ethic and love of conditioning was instilled in him by a great 'Sabounim' (instructor), Master Sai Visouvath, now of Tristar TKD.
After moving to Muskoka he continued to practice Martial Arts, this time in Shorinji-Ryu Karate under the late Don Racine, Sensei. Competing extensively at the time, he started to pursue serious conditioning. After a brief and disastrous (yet enlightening) stint with bodybuilding, he began to experiment with Kettlebell and Clubbell training. While at a Kettlebell Instructor certification course at the then diminutive, now very successful CrossFit Toronto (check out their fabulous site at www.crossfitto.com), he was introduced to CrossFit by CFTO head trainer John Vivian (via the now infamous "What is Fitness?" document). Initially skeptical, a very modest 13 round date with "Cindy" shattered any previously held conceptions of fitness. He's been an avid CrossFitter ever since.
