...is sometimes defined as repeating the same actions and expecting different results.
Last January (or last month or last Summer or 5 years ago), did you;
- Shell out the $$$ to join a gym, only to rarely show up and eventually quit
- Make a plan to "eat healthy"... that lasted 2 days
- Swear you would make this (that) year/month/season/whatever the one when you really made a change in your health and fitness
If it didn't work then, why would it now? And if you think it will, read the first line.
If you do think you've made a change, ask yourself if it's a real change or whether you're simply deluding yourself into believing your health and fitness is on the right track.
- How many pullups could you do at the start of '09? How many now?
- What could you squat a year ago? How 'bout today?
- How fast were you running or rowing 1000m, 2k or 5k? Are you faster and more efficient in this new decade?
- Have you improved your body composition in the last year (body fat % / lean muscle mass)?
- How have alterations to you diet affected your performance, aesthetics and mind set and what alterations sparked the best return?
If you think you are "living healthy", but can't answer any of these questions, chances are that your lifestyle isn't as healthy as you think... and it's guaranteed that you are not even within sight of you true potential.
So if what you're doing hasn't, won't and never will work, what should you do?
TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
If you're a women who's always avoided heavy lifting for fear of "getting big", get over it - it WILL NOT happen. Lift heavy in 2010 and SEXY, not big.
If you're a guy who' always avoided "cardio" because the traditional approach ('aerobics' classes, step, spin, jazzercise, etc) seemed pretty fluffy and effeminate, discover real "cardio" - metabolic conditioning at a firebreathing pace. Get lungs and a heart of steel to match the strength in the rest of your body.
If you don't know what a Kettlebell is or how to use one, what are you waiting for!? One of the best fitness tools EVER.
Never trained on Gymnastics rings or performed the Olympic lifts (Snatch, Clean & Jerk)? You had but a taste of your own potential for strength, coordination and speed.
Missed out on the irreplaceable value of having a real coach? Swallow your pride and find someone who know more than you do. Take away everything that is useful for you, leave behind that which doesn't apply.
Always trained alone. Get with a crew. You've never really trained, until you workout with people who would die today to lift more, go longer and go faster than you.
Got a stopwatch? Start using it. If you're not fighting against the clock (or moving really, really heavy loads), you've got no intensity. No intensity - no fitness.
If you eat grains and do long, slow distance running or cycling - ditch the grains and turn up the intensity - then watch the fat fall off of you!
Comfortable? If you are comfortable with, at or during your workouts - THEY ARE NOT HARD ENOUGH! Coach Glassman put it best;
"Performance is directly correlated with intensity. Intensity is directly correlated with discomfort."
So what would one do the is different and encompassed all the above recommendations (and more)?
Why CrossFit, of course!
