CrossFit is often promoted as a unique entity (rightly so).
We do different exercise. We use different equipment. We go faster and work harder.
None of those angles is particularly exclusive to CrossFit (although how we combine them certainly is). Whether we are talking about doing squats, using kettlebells or working at high intensity (for example), all the elements that make up this CrossFit phenomenon have generally been 'borrowed' from elsewhere - they are not necessarily uncommon.
What CrossFit does have that is unique, uncommon and unmatched elsewhere in the fitness industry is our community. CrossFitters (for the most part) are united. We are one huge family and the extent that CF'rs go to help out their fellow Kool-Aid drinkers never fails to amaze me.
This past weekend was a great example.
Saturday morning, 'Fight Gone Bad' went down in the River Mill Park.
Not only did we have a great turnout from CrossFit Muskoka, but from our CrossFit 'neighbors' to the South - CrossFit Orillia. We also had a dedicated CrossFit 'soloist', Aaron, up from Bracebridge.
In total, 22 athletes gave their all in the brutal throwdown named 'Fight Gone Bad' (three 5 min. rds. of wall ball, sdlhp, box Jumps, push press and rowing).
With no shortage of great coaching, encouragement and cheering, all the participants were able to put up some impressive numbers. Lots of PR's, absolutely no quitters!
The purpose of this event was to benefit Prostate Cancer Canada, who use their resources to fund research and raise awareness of the disease.
At this point (more $$ may still be coming in), our total is $1250! We are still waiting to hear the Canadian total, but no doubt it will be in the 10's of thousands. State side, the American affiliates raised over 1 million dollars!
Special thanks to James for rallying his troops, Charles for taking some great pics, David H. for making it out, Coach K. for keeping the flow going and for her great 'motivational speaking', Ken Inglis from Springhill Freshwater for supplying his fantastic H20, Tebby, Nat and Aaron for making the trek up here to get involved and all the Orillia and Muskoka 'before-it-was-cool' CrossFitters.. you guys are beasts!
